RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

okay, i seem to get it now, apparently, i didn't set the license for these things. I think there should be a pop up when publishing a design, state where the user has to fix first before publishing. the current flaw is that it is there but the user has to manually check. Further, there is "(required}" put on the title tag there but the colouring is just the same that it would be seen as optional.

I think it is best to have a coloured background for these "required" field to indicate that these are required and cannot proceed if not specified =\

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

My comments to the current state of the site...

- Infinite scrolling, I f@#ing hate it. And apparently there are exactly zero site display options to set for yourself as logged in user, so I can't get rid of it other than not using the site in the first place. Allow people to change display to classic pagination!

- Let people "like"/favorite prints!!!

- File names (even of files that won't end up on a printer SD card/USB stick, like STL) are automatically mangled: truncated, converted to lower case, spaces converted to dashes. Not cool! Leave them as they are. I myself "encode" a lot of info about the print details in my GCode filenames for example. The full filename carries important info that simply gets falsified or outright thrown away. If an user is too stupid to rename the file if their printer can't handle filenames this long, so what.

- tags can't have an underscore (or dash, or space), that's bullshit for tags that are multiple words (which only make sense in combination but not when split into mutliple separate tags). Thingiverse has this; do copy it.

- combined Markdown and limited HTML support/parsing is just getting in the way too often. Let users pick if they want to format with MD or HTML, then only parse entered text with regard to the picked language. Or drop one formatting method outright and leave only one available.

- you accept STL "source" file formats like SCAD, STEP, DXF but not Autodesk Inventor files? Extensions: IPT, IAM.

- when uploading a presliced GCode file, don't just stop with tagging it with the general type of material it was made for (PET, PLA, TPU, ...) but also let the uploader specify filament brand / line with it so it can be identified more accurately (e.g. Brand "Prusa", Line "Prusament" - distinguishment required since you also offer non-Prusament filament that does not appear to come from a different manufacturer, e.g. your PET Transparent Violet or Turquoise Blue). There certainly is a need for this, as for example the general PET profile in PrusaSlicer by far isn't suitable for every brand of PET out there. I have some PET - both a cheap and an expensive brand - that will both cause strong to extreme stringing with this profile, but they print perfectly with my custom print profiles.

- while we're at this, add a section to the site that allows users to share their filament print settings. Every print settings entry would have one or multiple particular printer model(s) it is designed for, and a particular material type, brand and optional brand line attached to it. Allow multiple users to post their settings for any such given combination of printer and filament type/brand/line and have them all grouped in one spot. Allow other users to rate the individual posted settings and per default sort them by user rating descending so the one that presumably works best stays at the top. Add general filtered search for filament print profiles, e.g. "display only profiles for MK3S printers, and among those only profiles for PET type filament". Bonus points if you add quick filament print settings export/import as file to PrusaSlicer - would be easier to share and download them with such a feature. It might also make sense to have users tag their settings for one or multiple particular type(s) of printing surface (for Prusa, smooth or textured steel sheet), or at least let them enter a very short comment that will also be displayed in the list of print profiles. In my experience, my profiles that work perfectly fine with the smooth sheet need to be tweaked for a slightly higher bed temperature when printing with the textured sheet, else they will not adhere to the bed well enough.

How come for every print in the database, I always see "0 (0)" stars (both my own designs and other designs).  I have seen notices of people giving stars to designs but they are not reflected anywhere I can find.  I do see number of downloads and views.

Are there any plans yet to add openscad support to prusaprinter? (similar to the Thingiverse customizer..)
i mainly publish .scad files as it adds so much more value to the users then just providing individual stl or gcode files....
But the only website i am aware that is currently supporting it is thingiverse.... which is kind of sad as they are not really doing it very good 😉

Problem saving updates to print description.

I tried the new import from Thingiverse. The import appear to work OK, the prints are visible on the profile in Draft status.
However when I go in to one of them, updates the print description and set the category, then click Save, the page appear to indicate that it is saving the updates.
But when I click Close, it prompts me if I want to close without saving.
If I say yes, it closes the edit window, but the print description is clearly not saved.

I don't see any missing data in the print dialog.
Any idea why it will not save the updates?

What kinda lunatic downloads models made out of gcode?

gcode files themselves should be obsoleted anyway. I can appreciate saved slicer parameters and slicer projects with various hand-crafted augmentations to print models and things - but a gcode file is too stupid to keep that higher level information. Gcode is a wonderful machine control language but all intelligence goes out the window when you use it as a file format.

This whole thing seems too vendor lock-in. The 'anonymized' map of prusa printers around the world is already a preview of how prusa wants to be an ecosystem and how they regard users' best interests. Telling you not to be concerned instead of asking why you're concerned and remedying their behavior.

Same with the inconsistent extrusion / bondtech gears issue. When prusa can do no wrong, you don't want them on top of a platform/ecosystem.

Where is support for PrusaPrinters?

Ratings are missing...

Would be really nice to have a "collection" feature like Thingverse has. I already see a few prints I'd like to get to, but I'm not likely remember them when I can get to them.

YES!  This would be great. I rely on my collections to find parts for my project ideas.  I like Thingiverse however I do not know how much longer they will be able to offer it for free. I say this because 1) I don’t think they make enough $ with Makerbot sales to put $ into upgrading the ThingV infrastructure... the performance is getting pretty bad.

Hi everyone,

Josef introduced our brand new community platform and you can read about it in this article: New PrusaPrinters

We've also prepared a video explaining all the new features and benefits:

What are your thoughts? What features would you like to see in the future?

I would like to to see some type of integration into the same Documentation engine (Dozuki) that Prusa, E3d and others use for manuals. This would be a valuable component for documenting “Project Designs” (ala Instructables) these could be linked to the 3D models.

Relationships :

3D models (Creator’s)<->Project Instructions (Creator)

3D models (other users with permission if req by licensing) <-> Project Instructions (Creator)

— I’m sure there would be some licensing incurred by Prusa for additional Users of Dozuki engine, but I would be willing to pay a small fee for access to this feature)

— Option: Prusa developed Documentation/Instruction Tool.

I just want to have a 3D printer vendor that sells good printers without trying to recreate established communities & ecosystems in their own image. Prusa's efforts all look like part 1 of vendor lock-in. Don't become dependent on prusa for everything, and don't let them become the gatekeepers to what used to be universal.

@peplevamp

When I make mods to my MK3, the best site to share it is PrusaPrinters.

i also use Thingiverse, but it has its drawbacks...

I think a brand needs development and this is a good way to do it, and the quality of the site is very high...

The ratings system is broken and the level of interaction is poor, but that is on the users.

This will likely be a profitable business and is likely critical that Prusa does well with it.

Worth noting that among Thingiverse's many problems has been a tendency for searches for "Prusa" to yield no results. Thingiverse is also run by a printer manufacturer with the same desire to rule the world.

I'll bounce around, but do spend a lot of time at Thingiverse. PrusaPrinters is starting to get a bit of their own Prusa-centric vibe though, especially for things like test pieces focused on the Prusas. Other than that, I mostly start with a google search.

I also enjoy designing my own solutions using Fusion 360 and OpenSCAD, so try to roll my own STLs when practical. I've put a couple up at Thingiverse and PrusaPrinters.

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

I tend to put my designs on Thingiverse first and then importing it to PrusaPrinters. This is for two reasons.

  1. The import path is easier from Thingiverse to PrusaPrinters. (Obviously, thanx to the effort of Prusa's web coders. PrusaPrinters has all the reason in the world to allow easy moving from Thingiverse or other sites because it is the new kid on the block. Thingiverse has no reason to provide an import path to their site because they are the behemoth nearly default place to go for designs.)
  2. I want to provide my source files, and PrusaPrinters does not yet support the filetype from my 3D CAD software (FreeCAD). So I put the full thing up on Thingiverse and have to reference back to it in my PrusaPrinters descriptions for those files.

If the PrusaPrinters mods are still paying attention to this thread, I repeat my plea for FreeCAD files to be a supported 3D model file type. I'd also like to add to this request for PDF to be supported as pictures/documentation (with automatic thumbnail generation) to allow supplemental drawings like, for example, dimensioned drawings. See my latest design on PrusaPrinters for how often I had to back-reference to "The Other Site"(TM) for the file-types not supported on PrusaPrinters.

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

Possibly a dumb question...   When I upload a 3mf file and the associated gcode file, I'll sometimes slice and print it at different sizes with different infills or orientations. When I upload multiple gcode variants I get the following prompt...  "

You have uploaded more that one gcode. Is your object really a multi-part print? If the gcodes are just variations of the same 3D model, please upload it to the User print files section. Help us to make PrusaPrinters a tidy place."

Where is the "User print files section" ???

All your filament are belong to us!

I just had this prompt happen myself - you have to _first_ publish the item, then use the User Prints tab which only becomes available after it's published. It works just like if you were adding a User Print to someone else's item.
