Someone from Prusa really needs to get on the Reddit 3dprinting sub and answer the questions regarding placement of the pins on the world map. Apparently in many cases it is specifically flagging individual residences and people are not happy. At minimum, it has raised questions as to whether customer registration information has been used consistently with Prusa's privacy policy and legal requirements in many jurisdictions.

i just checked this sub and couldn't find one single top level post on top about this in the last 24h, doesn't seem like a big problem to me.

I suggest a read of this thread. People are pushing to lodge GPDR complaints among other things. Those rules have teeth. Better to get on top of the issue quick.

And now my posts are moderated, and edit windows reduced to minutes. Unimpressed by the update so far. Contributing is going to be a pain in the ass.

Hi, great initiative!!! Love the looks and features you´ve already deployed!

I´d add the following:

  • Liking concept (Now we have the evaluation based on a structured workflow, download dependent)
    • Add a tracking page where we get the list of prints we´ve liked. Sort of a "save for later" list. Different lists would be even better to categorize based on your own priorities.
  • Add video support (either upload them or linked to Youtube)
  • Add photos and videos on the printing instructions so they become more easy to follow on complex prints.
  • Render photos to fit the Cover space and not just stretch them. Most photos loose their "mojo" 🙂
  • Add a remix reference to properly link designs and improvements. Community is really strong on improving things.
  • Some sort of Statistics panel where you can follow your impact on the community
  • Let others upload their images of the prints they´ve done on your design

These are some I got in mind from the first day of usage.

I like some of the features..  The forum needs some work.  I would like to see more information on posters: number of posts, location, etc.  A member list where you can look up moderators and admins would be nice.

I reviewed bobstro's link and am very unhappy to see my printer displayed on a map without my consent. Nor can I get the "claim your printer" process to work. I don't mind some aspects of the new forums. (It was through the "Recent Activity" feature that I found this thread.) But Prusa would have done better to ask some frequent users to test and/or provide feedback before making the change. In a thread I started, all of the old photos got replaced with unrelated ones, for example.

It seems we can't upload files other than gcode, stl or amf/3mf. I tried uploading the Fusion 360 source file with no luck. I'd also like to upload some OpenSCAD source code. It seems I still have a need for Thingiverse. Hopefully these issues will be ironed out soon.

Same. I tried to upload a FreeCAD file and it didn't like it.

BTW, the suggestion about zipping multiple files might be legacy (or misunderstanding by the coder of the site). I was able to upload multiple files by selecting them all then dragging and dropping all of them onto the orange drop-zone. Even when I tried to drag and drop a FreeCAD file and a .slt file, the website choked on the FreeCAD file but uploaded the stl file without issue.

Granted, that might be my OS and/or Browser. I was testing on Win10 into either Chrome or FireFox (I can't remember which, I use both on that machine).

RE: New PrusaPrinters - The best 3D model database and community!

The postcode issue is concerning. In the UK, a post code can refer to 20 or so homes, or an individual farmhouse in some more rural situations. I don't think it is wise, moral, right or justifyable for the exact location (within a few hunded yards potentially) of a non-consenting purchaser to be plotted on a publically accessable map. I'm sure a legal eagle will rip into the GDPR aspects too.

What is also a potential issue is the ability for nasty Gcode to be uploaded to the site that could break peoples printers. Unless Prusa themselves provide Gcode for specific prints (spare parts etc), then only the STL or similar files should be uploaded and provided to the community. I wonder how many PEI beds will be damaged, heatbreaks broken and firmware settings messed up by deliberately nasty Gcode?

Most of this concerns are answered in this blog entry:

Sadly, this response doesn't really provide any assurances to those most concerned. Those affected or who are losing interest in Prusa printer because of the risks these sorts of "features" impose are explaining exactly why such "harmless" data should not be made public without explicit opt-in.

  1. https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/bhcw7y/_/elrwuuk/
  2. https://twitter.com/foosel/status/1121088708684472320

These are individuals who administer one of the largest 3D printing reddit communities and develop one of the most widely used 3D printer support packages. If you're an individual with any sort of public exposure, providing hints to would-be stalkers is a bad thing, especially when those hints were developed based on information that you provided under specific terms.

On a more basic level, what the hell is the point of those "unclaimed" dots? If I want to provide support or prints, I can flag my location or general vicinity. Prusa is basically saying "here's a location near where somebody who has not asked to share their information had their printer shipped." How is that productive in any way? With privacy concerns popping up in just about every news cast, I'd expect this to have been thought through better.

Prusa is really coming across as tone-deaf on this issue. And I'm one of those who has been accused of being a fan-boy in the past.

I get where you're coming from, but being a web-developer myself I also get what their idea behind it was.
If you introduce a new feature that is "empty", people are more reluctant to add to it.

So the underlying idea was probably: "Let's pre-populate the map to show how far prusa has spread world wilde". Which is something I would probably do as well. Given the clarification in the blog about the GDPR practices I personally am satisfied. My "dot" was reasonably far from my actual location for example.

That being said: Now that people are using it, IMO the best thing would be to completely get rid of the unclaimed circles completely.
They no longer add value since they cannot be claimed anyway, there are a lot of regular pointers now and it's obviously causing a rukus.

Not to mention Prusa is still exposing registrants email addresses in open text ... but this time I'll let them find it. Wordpress is so much fun.

Please give a read of the links I provided. The two individuals there do a good job of explaining why a 1/2 mile fuzzing of location is not enough for something as unique as 3D printing. They've mentioned having to deal with uninvited viewers of posted videos and pics showing up. One cited the plants in her windows being sufficient to identify her home in a relatively isolated community. I think this is a case book study in companies approaching user privacy with a overly-cavalier attitude, thinking that "if it's legal it must be OK". It's a sad world when a woman who actively develops software that many of us use daily has to worry about her safety being compromised in this way.

One more about the geolocation. Read here about how an analyst was able to identify info based on geolocation data fuzzed to a 10 mile radius and rotated daily.
