I hate spam

Why, oh, why has the dreaded spam monster invaded our beloved forum?

RE: I hate spam

This is very mild fortunately.

It does my head in as well, I have never really been in the market for French credit, or Klingon life insurance.

I have frequented the Thermaltake.com forum, they get trolled with pages and pages at a time, it is really bad, need to search through pages and pages of utter crud to find one relevant post.

Let's hope they go somewhere else, not sure if there is anything that can be done to stop it, they always seem to find a way through.

Tank you very much!

I thinks this forum will have that from time to time - alternative is "click on all of the pictures in the following 30 frames that do not have a sidewalk or a car in them."

@bobstro

The unfortunate thing is this kind of spam gives a band name to the canned meat often sold in the US.

There are few ways to deal with spams on forum like those. One is obscure verification of users, for example with customer only. Which can cause issue, if you bought the printer from or via 3rd party (reseller, friend...). Another is blacklisting/hiding words, content, URLs in text body, which can also cause some issues by users, trying to write something/describe with weak language/word abilities. Like people from USA would start with free speech comments.
Keep in mind the bad person can create zilion of nick names with different emails from any IP address anytime. Like in India are known groups, that for few cents will do it for you.

Anyway the best way to deal with it is via community. Simply if few people press the [Report] button, it would be either verified by verified person or auto-hid until checked with admins.

You could also stop spam from getting onto the board in the first instance, but this would involve more stringent first post moderation, as it is normally first posts of new users that contain spam.

I.E first posts do not appear until moderated, not sure how feasible this is for our mods.

In the circumstances of Prusa that would work quite well, if for instance a message was put forward to new users of the forum when registering stating that new users posts will not appear until moderated to filter out spam, should they have any urgent issues they can contact the 24/7 chat.

Forum spam is a chronic problem.  I have dealt with it for years.  One of my forums is semi-dormant  due to these trolls.

If you know the mechanism, it is not so hard to overcome the obstacles. Like register thousands of accounts, put a non-explicit question to overcome first post limits (like "is mini good to buy" or titles from youtube videos, with question mark,  alternations). And then start spamming. And additionally, there is also question of stolen credentials (tried logins from other websites). But main blocker is how many moderators would have to Prusa pay, to be active in filtering+ban+user_queries. And from other side, an angry Josef, who could start flagging other posts as spam, just because they sound in some negative way.

There are forums that are more resistant to spam.  They do cost money.

I think we need to hire a Spam hunter, Be berrwie berrwie quite, we're hunting Spam.

I hear if you put a bag on the ground and tap the back of it with a stick, out in the tall grass of course, the spam will run into the bag and you can catch it in the bag if your fast enough. 🤔 ? maybe that was snipe.

Maybe we should consult with the surviving members of Monty Python first.
