How to set idler tension?

I have a Sovol SV-01 which has a clone Titan extruder and I have no idea how tight the make the thumb screw. I think it's too loose because when I try to use a mechanical filament runout detector, print quality is affected. I'm guessing on the basis of no information that the problem is friction in the detector.

Is there some way to set the tension other than suck it and see?

If the filament is slipping, it's too loose. If you unload the filament and see it mangled from the extruder teeth, it's too tight.

I had the same problem with the crappy filament runout sensor on my Artillery Sidewinder. I finally just removed it. I'll try a better one at some point.
