Friction welding - 3mm filament worthwhile?

I made a quick try at friction welding by mounting some filament onto my aging Dremel. It works, but the filament is very prone to breaking and must be replaced frequently. I'm wondering if anybody has tried using 3mm filament and whether it makes much of a difference? I don't want to buy a spool of 3mm just to try it, though I might pick up a sample pack if it's promising.

If there are any 3d pens that take 3mm you might be able to get a pack of ready-made "sticks" for those cheap. Logically with thicker filament you'll get a wider and more solid weld, in addition to needing to replace sticks less often.
