First print with ABS

I was expecting it to be challenging. I'd read that ABS gave off noxious gases and required a warm draft free environment. Using Prusa ABS, ambient about 13C, no draft screen or enclosure, it just worked. All very odd, I wonder what I did wrong?

The Prusa profile for Prusa ABS calls for inital and subsequent temp of 255C but the packaging specifies 230-250C. A small difference but odd nevertheless.

This is not a problem for small objects but rather for larger components with a large e.g. rectangular contact surface.
But if it works for you as well...what more could you want... 👍

Congratulations!

Many ABS prints will print as easily as PLA.

The larger, thicker, and taller ones are the prints that seem to have issues.

When doing ABS I always be sure to preheat the machine and let it stabilize before launching the print.  Before I got the enclosure I would use the draft shield option with anything but the smallest prints.  I also suggest letting ABS prints cool close to room temperature before removing them.

I've always printed ABS with the default settings.  (And, IMAO, 13-ish ambient is COLD!  Brrrrrrr!) 😉

The only problem I'm have albeit with small parts, is that the prime swipe I normally do with other materials, sticks to the nozzle, gets dragged across the bed and is incorporated into the print.

Here's that bit of my startup GCode -

G92 E0                                                        ; Reset Extruder
M221 S100                                                  ; Set flow to 100
G1 Z2.0 F3000                                          ; Move Z Axis up little to prevent scratching of Heat Bed
G1 X5.1 Y10 Z0.28 F5000.0                   ; Move to start position
G1 X5.1 Y200 Z0.28 F1500.0 E15         ; Draw the first line
G1 X6.1 Y200 Z0.28 F5000.0                ; Move to side a little
G1 X6.1 Y10 Z0.28 F1500.0 E30           ; Draw the second line
;
G92 E0                                                        ; Reset Extruder
G1 Z1.0 F3000                                          ; Move Z Axis up little to prevent scratching of Heat Bed

I wonder if I should omit the prime completely for ABS? or maybe add a few more short lines to give it a bit more stick? or maybe just stop whining, count my lucky stars and manually remove.

@jsw

The simultaneous up and down side of living on an island (paradoxically spelt different) is a mild climate. Rarely much below 5C or above 20C.

The thing I like about abs is that you can get a nice smooth finish with it by carefully sanding and then brushing or wiping a bit of acetone gently on it.

RE: First print with ABS

I've always used the default prime lines (short line with PS in legacy MK3S mode and with Cura, longer-double in MMU2S mode) with ABS and had no issues with the nozzle picking it up and dragging it off.

One thing I've noticed after printing quite a few smaller ABS prints on the textured sheet is that the prime line is beginning to stick too well, even if I apply glue or Layerneer over the prime line part of the sheet.  I've been working around it by simply leaving it on for 2-3 prints and afterward it will be thick enough to pull off without breaking.

@jsw

I think I go the stop whining route.
