Cintinuing Adult Education diy kit

I'm interested in our local technical/community college offering an adult continuing education (learning in retirement) class that would build a 3d printer for each participant.

As wonderful as my Mk3 kit was to build, and is to print, the $$ are just a bit too much. I am looking at around US$250.

The school can cut the structural members, and maybe do some soldering. The tools needed for assembly would be supplied by the school. The class(s) would be supervised by a savvy tech teacher.

I have searched the internet and can't quite find something appropriate. It would be good if an e-manual and videos were available also.

Can someone offer some suggestions? Have I explained my needs adequately?

If you can produce the structural parts yourself, you might be best served building your own clone; we know the design is solid, and at that point the main expense would be motion controls (rods, bearings) electronics (boards, bed, motors) and hot ends. Naturally you'll have to trade off some of the quality for price point but there seems to be a plethora of parts available to find the best fit within your price point.

If you go with clone parts be sure to budget some extras for DOAs... Unfortunately it really boils down to what features and capability you want the end product to have - we don't have a sense of that. If you list the main things you want them to get out of it at the end perhaps folks here can suggest some good sources/parts that meet those needs without breaking the bank.

No bells and whistles - no filament sensor, small bed, no heat, simple but effective manual bed levelling.

Participants will be given simple 3d models. Gain an understanding of .stl file type, various basic slicer parameters, simple physics of converting solid filament to layer (extruder and hot end), overhangs.

It will be successful if a number of the participants go on to buy a more expensive printer.

Go back to where it all started:

https://reprap.org/wiki/RepRap

Josef has been giving back to the community for years; his designs have always been public domain.

If I were doing a community project - I would start with the MK2. Rock solid design, not too fancy. The aluminum frame sure improves your chance for success.

All of the plastic parts STL files are available on the Prusa site - free. Einsy clone boards are cheap - and run current firmware. Same for the display.

I don't know that I would give up on a heated bed or the PINDA. They are too useful.

That's a great suggestion to make your own printers from one on reprap designs. If you can source frame and print plastic parts (designs are available), you can get remaining parts from well basically anywhere, including Prusa site. Another options if you favor Prusa designs could be taking a look into Chinese clones that sell sets without plastic parts, probe and electronics, but you may opt for individual components from their shops instead of whole kit if you can make frame. You are not limited to Prusa clone parts BTW, you can pick other options for extruders, hotends, probes etc, most what's popular on market will work with Marlin firmware.

@robert-rmm200

or this one, but Adam admitted that doing it this way cost him more on components than buying new mk3s kit or even assembled printer. But he did it for fun.

I wouldn't go for Rambo or Einsy boards anymore. With BTT boards and TMC2208/TMC2209 drivers we have better alternatives nowadays.
