Yes, the buffer is included in the MMU2S kit. Without buffer or any alternative, you can basically use the MMU2s only under continuous supervision.

I have no experience with it as I went straight for rewinding spools, however, those needed quite a bit of fine tuning to finally work reliably for me.

I would recommend you to start with the buffer and the system as intended. It is a bit of a hassle to change filaments with it apparently but when you find it too bulky or don't like it for other reasons, you can always go ahead and try an alternative. Just make sure the orientation of the spools buffer and printer is exactly as described in the manual. Wrongly oriented overall equipment layout and spools can cause problems.

PS: Also the simple spool stands for 5 spools are included in the kit.
