Bondtech QR DualDrive Extruder

I had an extrusion failure last night after tightening my Bondtech screw (aka the smallest screw in the world). I awoke this morning to the dreaded clicking, halfway into a 12 hour PLA print, and had a centimeter or two of air above the last successful layer. This has happened before with PLA as the screw went missing, and after replacing the screw, likely due to the motor becoming too hot. Letting a small desk fan blow on the extruder motor seemed to solve the problem but I may have tightened the housing door a little too tight. If that's the case there really needs to be a better, quantitative way to secure the hatch and cool the motor. We also need a flow rate sensor; just knowing the gear is moving is not enough.
Almost as if the internet was reading my thoughts (which it may have been) I discovered this new Bondtech. It seems familiar and may have been mentioned on these forums before, but would this work on the next Prusa? I've only printed using PLA and PETG and frequently have problems with the former. A dual drive extruder seems like a more sensible option.

Or maybe I'm confusing the technology here. Is this the same thing we currently have? The idea of a single drive shaft moving two gears doesn't seem like enough.

From the looks of it, you already have this "kit" without the quick release lever.
The most common reasons for the set screw falling out are:
1) screw not aligned with shaft flat (reversing torque will wiggle it loose)
2) insufficient toque when tightening
3) too much torque when tightening (stripped threads)

ug, the grub screw. the only problem i have really had with my printer.
i had no choice but to blue locktite that bastard. havent had one issue since ( knocks on lack particle board). i also found the replacement grub screw was junk, and ordered a pack of better screws. getting the loctite in the space was super tricky, but so worth it.
really, that gear should be fitted to the shaft (a D hole) so the screw isnt always the failure point.

Agreed on the fitting. Perhaps ironically the screw wouldn't be needed if the gear itself was made additively.
Overall this is such a wonderful printer produced by great group of people. Their 100,000 (130,000) printer YouTube video is worth watching.
