Here's some examples of large format FDM printers. If we can replicate what they're building them from..

https://bigrep.com/bigrep-one/

https://3dplatform.com/3d-platform-announces-the-workbenchxtreme/

https://www.modix3d.com/

https://shop.re3d.org/products/gigabot-xlt

But, I assume we would rather want to stay with the roots and go with a Instructable Mega Prusa design?

Too big and too rich for my wallet.

I agree.  The Modix printer looks great, but I am not willing to pay $3,500 for a 610x610x610 printer.  I do not need a printer that is that big.

That is what I like about Josef Prusa.  He makes a high quality printer that does not break your bank.  Seriously, I would drop down my credit card right now if I could get a Prusa printer that is 400x400x400 for $995 as a kit and $1,295 as pre-assembled.  In fact, I would pay the same amount for the printer even if the size was as small as 360x360x360.  Josef, if you can hit this size and price, you will sell a TON of these printers!

I wasn't saying the printer actually needs to be as big as those examples. Just examples of what material they're making them out of when they start getting to larger sizes. I'm personally not even using the entire build area of my MK3S.

I am printing a "Magic Wand" right now.  I had to use my CR-10.  I have my fingers crossed and I am hoping that the CR-10 does not fail (again).  I wish that I had a Prusa printer with a larger build area so I could print larger projects like this one on the more reliable Prusa printer.

I'm on the lookout for a small desktop printer. That may be a bit too small, but I like the direction it's going!

PLEASE, NOOOOOO!!!!!   I do not want a 40 x 40!!!!  I want a 400 x 400.  Josef, you dropped off the zero at the end!!!!!!  Put the zeros back on the ends and give us a 400 x 400 printer!!!!!!

Hahahahaahaa!!!!  I am crying because of the tiny 40 x 40 printer, but I am laughing at your joke!  Josef missed the size that I want by an order of magnitude!!!!

RE: 400 x 400 Prusa Printer?

I am fine with the given print bed size, especially considering the construction with the moving bed.

When I print bigger objects, I split them and glue them together. The placement of the seams makes a huge difference then. I have much better looking parts when using the complex feature in meshmixer for splitting large, especially organic-shaped, objects. This way you can sometimes make seams very hard to tell. @charles-h13

There may be some limitations when it comes to i3 design, i.e. I can see moving bed (single motor, pulley, belt, linear bearings) being problematic with taller heavier prints. IMO if they are to release bigger printers, some adjustments may be necessary. Or a completely new design that's not i3 - for the purpose of printing tall objects that you want, tall delta style printer may be more suitable. Or maybe a big cube kit coreXY style printer, which would also conveniently act as a preparation for heated chamber, or different tool set (CNC, laser).

I miss only lenght of bed, rest of dimmension are ok for me, but I want to print 350mm long object... I'm creating my own models of mechanical parts, I could deal with it, but...

The beauty of the Prusa is not only the design of the integration of multiple parts and software / firmware.  I can see the same happening with an XYZ printer.

Was the 40x40 printer a joke?  I hope that Josef was alluding to a 400x400 printer.  My credit card is at the ready position if Josef comes out with a 400x400 printer at a reasonable cost!

Was the 40x40 printer a joke?

I believe a hobbyist built it and presented it to Prusa. I don't think it was ever meant to indicate a future product.

I am on the verge to buy a MK3 i3 but would love to have a bigger print bed as well to be honest.

If you print mechanical parts then you should also miss at least height. You need to place the part on the bed the way that mechanical stress is distributed along the printing direction and not between layer lines. Means the part itself defines how it need to be placed on the bed. Sometimes bigger length/width is required and sometimes height.

8 inches or 200mm x 200 mm is fine for most of what I print.  I need height.
