How to sand without whitening the color?

I printed this figurine with a wood filament.

Do you know how I can do to remove the small over-layers of filament that can be seen lighter in the image?

I tried with a heat gun that did nothing 🙁

I usually use a hobby/modeling file to clean up my prints from stuff like that. If you go slow so you don't heat things up you shouldn't get discoloration. Having a modeling pick is also handy to scrape away the remnants after filing bits down.

Since you're clearly concerned about the outcome on this model, you might print something quick that you can practice/experiment on first.

RE: How to sand without whitening the color?

Hi gnat and denny,

i have the same model and the same problem so to speak. I can not advise doing this with a file. It will crub of the burnt layer of the filament and make it look more white underneath. I also useda heatgun for the strings but i did not find a method jet to remove the zipps and blobs without disturbing the print surface.

Any advice would be appreciated

For the moment I left my statue without touching anything because all that indicates "manual-s" is true 🙁

I also have the same problem with sanding my 3D prints. The approach I have taken is to sand the model as usual with varying sandpaper grits and then when finished I will overcoat the entire model with Pledge Floor Care (now called Revive It), which is an acrylic floor coating. ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ARPH4C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

Many modelers use this product as a gloss overcoat for models prior to applying decals or as a finishing gloss coat. The product can be brushed or applied with an airbrush straight from the bottle. For 3D printed models I just use a brush since the product levels very well and leaves no brush marks. I find that a coat or two of the acrylic will usually hide any discoloration from sanding. Sometimes I will brush a coat on a model even if I have not done any sanding to give the model some protection and a nice shine.

Moisten a paper towel with mineral oil and lightly rub it over the entire object. This works for most colors.
