feeling the urge to brag - ceiling lamp almost finished

This is the project that got me into 3D-printing. We needed a new ceiling lamp and couldn't find one that we liked, so we threw a few ideas around about making one ourselves. After quite few iterations the idea of a deconstructed Moebius band surfaced and the quest for a way to built it lead to the purchase of an i3.

Many iterations of the base design later and probably even more stupid questions in the forum (a huge shoutout to all of you who patiently explained things to me) there is finally something that resembles a working lamp. Having it working this morning generated an irresistible urge to brag about it, so here it is.

A few technical details:

The lighting is simple LED strips, 24V, 5W/m

I originally wanted to print the black parts in ASA, assuming that they would get too warm for PLA. They warped horribly, so I did a test in PLA and measured the temp whith the LED installed and it didn't go over 40degrees. Hence PLA...

The semi-transparent bits are Taulman t-glase. 0% infill for most of the circumference.

The diffusors are also t-glase, 100% infill.

Designed in fusion360.

Once I have come up with a good idea how to make a drilling template for the ceiling holes and it hangs safely I will post a final image.

Should there be interest I am more than happy to share design files or .stl's

RE: feeling the urge to brag - ceiling lamp finally finished

After ironing out a few last minute glitches the lamp is finally at the ceiling and working.

That looks super cool and modern, great job. It might be awesome to add a little extra wire so the loops could run down the sides and be hidden in the ring. That way it would just be the ring with the lights perpendicular making it a little cleaner.

@stultzm

The original idea was actually to hide the wiring inside. Unfortunately my very limited F360 skills prevented that. I was unable to come up with a hinge design that would have allowed to run the wiring on the inside of the ring segments.

I also realized way too late that having designed simple round pegs in round holes of the ring segments would lead to a somewhat twisted ring. Should there ever be a version 2 of this lamp I hope to have acquired enough design skill to get the wiring on the inside and design better connection elements for the ring.

It would of course have been totally boring if my first attempt at designing and making something would have resulted in something that would not leave any scope for improvement 🙂
