Z-axis calibration keeps failing, possibly causeing upper layer issues

Hello,

I own an Prusa MK3S and have been putting it to good use for the last three years. Now I am helping a friend to fix his Prusa Mini that I am not too familiar with, despite my research over the last two days.

When I calibrate the Mini, the Z-axis continues to fail. I have loosened pretty much every screw on the Z-axis to ensure there is minimal resistance when it's moving the upwards. I also removed the lead screw (see picture) and put it next to the printer to ensure resistance isn't the issue.

The MINDA is correctly installed (0.9mm distance from the heat bed) and works just as it should.

I can print just fine up to a height of about 2.5cm when the trouble starts (see picture). I believe this to be a problem linked to failed z-axis calibration.

Anyone with a smart idea as to what could be the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few specs:

  • 0.6mm nozzle
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • PLA
  • Bondtech Dual Drive Extruder (same issues with the original version)

Hello,

I spent two hours today chatting with Prusa and their extremely helpful staff and it turns out, I have an over-sensitive MINDA.

The recommended distance between the MINDA and the head bed is 0.8mm (height of a credit card), however, mine only works when the distance is about 0.5mm.

For anyone who faces similar problems in future: just lower your MINDA a notch and see it goes.
